Los Angeles Pterygium Surgery Southern California

A pterygium (TER-i-gee-um) is often referred to as Carnosidad or Pterigión in the Spanish communities of Los Angeles and Southern California. It is a fleshy pink scar tissue that sometimes crosses the cornea (the clear front window of the eye). One or both eyes may be involved and a patient can have more than one pterygia in each eye. Pterygium can very in size from small to large. Pterygium is often visible on the eye before they cause symptoms. It may feel like something is in the eye. It can become irritated, itchy, or cause burning sensation. Large pterygium can also distort the cornea, causing blurred vision.

(A) Pterygium is a fleshy pink scar tissue often referred to as Carnosidad or Pterigión in Spanish.

Normal tissue (B) is taken from another section of the eye (graft). Sometimes, an artificial membrane is used instead.

Pterygium (A) is removed and graft tissue (B) is put in its place.
